Supporting Tests
Specifications for aural tests and improvisation tests are changing for all instruments. The changes apply to all exams taken from 1 January 2017 onwards.
Please note that there is no overlap for supporting tests, and the previous aural tests and improvisation tests can therefore no longer be used. Please note that there is no change to the unpitched aural tests for drum kit. |
In addition to performing pieces and technical work, candidates take two supporting tests. Parameters for each grade are outlined at the front of each syllabus. Please check these carefully when preparing for the exam.

Aural
Aural specifications are changing from 1 January 2017 onwards for all instruments.
- Aural parameters from 2017
- Sample tests, advice, explanations and sample answers are available in two books: Aural Tests Book 1, from 2017 (Initial to Grade 5) and Aural Tests Book 2, from 2017 (Grades 6-8). Each volume contains two CDs. These books are available from your local music retailer or from our online shop.
- Sample tests for Grades 3 and 4: alto and bass clef versions

Sight reading
Sight reading is an option up to and including Grade 5, but compulsory from Grade 6 onwards.
- Examples of sight reading tests for most instruments are available in the Sound at Sight series. These books are available to purchase from your local music retailer or from our online shop.
- Percussion and additional drum kit sight reading examples can be obtained from www.sightreadingcentral.co.uk.
Improvisation
Improvisation specifications are changing from 1 January 2017 onwards for all instruments.

Musical knowledge
Musical knowledge is available up to and including Grade 5.
You should read the syllabus requirements carefully before your exam. If you do not meet all the relevant requirements, the examiner may refer your exam result to Trinity’s London office for review and marks may be deducted.
